Where was Jesus born?
The
gospel of the evangelist Matthew tells us that "Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea (now Palestine) in the days of Herod the king." Luke 2:1-7 describes Joseph and Mary as both being residents of Nazareth in the Galilee. They had to travel the approximately 90 miles from Nazareth, in Galilee, to Bethlehem, in Judea, in order to take part in the Roman census which was obligatory due to the Roman's system of taxation. The Bible tells that Jesus was born while they were in Bethlehem.

Where was Jesus born - Location of Bethlehem
The town of Bethlehem is in the West Bank, some six miles south of Jerusalem which was in the southern region of Judea at the time of the birth of Jesus. Nazareth is in the northern Galilee region more than 90 miles away from Bethlehem.

Where was Jesus born? The words of the Bible
From the Narratives of Matthew and Luke it is written that he was born in Bethlehem.
Matthew 1, 1-2; 6-7; 11-12; 16-17.
Luke 2, 1-12; 16-21.

It came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David), to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

So it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. She brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Micah also mentions Bethlehem as the place of His birth.

Where was Jesus born? The Scene of the Nativity - an Inn or a Cave?
So, according to the Bible, Jesus was born in Bethlehem where he was laid in a manger because there was no room in the inn. The assumption has been that Jesus was born in a stable, due to the reference to a manger, however Justin Martyr, a Christian who lived less than a century after the time of Jesus Christ places the scene of the Nativity in a cave. Justin Martyr (100165) was an early Christian. Justin Martyr was born at Shechem which lay on the high road going north from Jerusalem. He places the scene of the Nativity in a cave. Over this cave has risen the Church and Convent of the Nativity, and there is a stone slab with a star cut in it to mark the spot where the Saviour was born.
